Reunion, Mayotte dispatch 37 firefighters to battle France's largest wildfire since 1949

Thirty-seven firefighters from Reunion and Mayotte boarded flights on Sunday, August 2, 2026, bound for mainland France to reinforce crews battling what authorities have described as the country’s worst wildfire since 1949.

The contingent breaks down to 27 specialized forest fire personnel from Reunion and 10 firefighters from Mayotte. Prefectural authorities have scheduled the deployment for 15 days, a window calculated to provide meaningful relief to ground crews already stretched thin after weeks of continuous operations.

The operational case for the deployment was made explicit by Cyrille Melchior, president of the Reunion Department. “When our compatriots face such a trial, Reunion cannot remain silent,” Melchior stated. “In these difficult moments, our duty is to express solidarity, but also to act.” He went further on the practical side, noting that Reunion’s personnel bring “recognized experience in vegetation fires, interventions in difficult environments, and management of major crises.” Their arrival, he said, would “reinforce a system that has been heavily strained for several weeks and contribute to the necessary relief efforts essential to the safety of personnel already deployed on the ground.”

That strain is real. Eight days of uninterrupted firefighting had pushed existing crews to their limits before the Indian Ocean contingent was mobilized.

By contrast, the fire itself had, by the time of the deployment, stopped expanding. Even Wednesday’s extreme heat event, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, failed to reignite its growth trajectory. Authorities described themselves as “reasonably optimistic” that containment was approaching, though they were careful not to declare the operational burden lifted.

That caution reflects a core challenge in large wildfire management. Fires of this scale exhaust personnel through sheer duration, not just intensity. Rotating fresh crews into the field is less a contingency measure than a structural necessity, and the 15-day mission window from Reunion and Mayotte was designed precisely to cover that gap. The deployment demonstrates the operational capacity of rescue services across France’s Indian Ocean zone to project support when metropolitan territories face a crisis of this magnitude.

Whether the reinforcement arrives in time to ease the final push toward full containment, or whether conditions shift again before the megafire is declared under control, remains the question ground commanders will be answering in the days ahead.
