Regional Festival Expands Performance Network Across Ariege Communes

SAINT-GIRONS: INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL BRINGS PERFORMANCES ACROSS ARIEGE VILLAGES

The Bethmalais association has run its annual festival in the Ariege region for more than three decades, building a structure of large-scale spectacles, concerts, exhibitions and street performances that draws performers and audiences across multiple communes. Since 1991, the organization has distributed cultural programming throughout the year and across neighboring municipalities, each serving as a venue partner in the broader initiative.

This year’s edition demonstrates the expanded reach of that model. The international lineup includes groups from Costa Rica, Madagascar, Chile, Bangladesh, Peru, Poland and the local Bethmalais ensemble. Rather than concentrate performances in a single location, organizers have dispersed the groups across villages throughout the region, creating a traveling cultural circuit that extends from the central town outward.

The programming schedule reflects this distributed approach. On the opening evening, all invited ensembles participated together in the Autrefois le Couserans parade, a shared moment before dispersing to separate venues. That same night, performances took place in Serres-sur-Arget, Vicdessos and Lorp. Nightly performances across different village combinations then continued through the week. Monday evening at 21 hours, Costa Rica and Madagascar performed in Eycheil while Chile and Bangladesh played Mas-d’Azil and Peru, Poland and the Bethmalais took the stage in Castillon.

Tuesday, August 4, shifts the lineup again. Costa Rica and Madagascar move to Seix; Peru and Bangladesh to Massat; Chile and Poland to Saint-Lizier. By Wednesday, August 5, the groups rotate once more, with Costa Rica and Bangladesh in La Bastide-de-Serou, Peru and Madagascar in Alos, and Poland and Chile in Betchat. This rotation pattern continues through the week, ensuring each village receives performances while each ensemble travels between multiple venues.

Parallel to the evening village performances, the festival maintains a daily afternoon program in Saint-Girons itself. On the parvis of the church at place J.-Buffelan, performances begin at 17 hours 30 minutes each day. Monday featured Costa Rica; Tuesday brought Poland; Wednesday showcases Madagascar; Thursday features Peru; Friday presents Chile. This dual-venue structure allows residents of Saint-Girons and surrounding areas to experience the festival without traveling to outlying communes.

The festival also incorporates visual programming beyond live performance. An exhibition titled “Par monts et vallees: eclats et merveilles des Pyrenees” (By Mountains and Valleys: Splendors and Wonders of the Pyrenees) displays costumes and remains on view through August 8, 2026 at the Maison de la citoyennete, located at 16, rue de la Republique in Saint-Girons. The exhibition extends the festival’s cultural engagement into material culture and regional heritage.

The overall structure reflects what organizers describe as the festival’s distinctive character: the surprise of unlikely encounters and the conviviality that emerges when international and local ensembles share space and time. By routing performances through multiple villages while maintaining a central daily program, the festival distributes both its logistical presence and its cultural impact across the region. Whether that dispersed model continues to attract ensembles from further afield in coming editions remains the open question for an association now well into its fourth decade.
